The skies are turning dark, and the cold is settling in – it must be winter in Berlin. Even though the long, warm days are gone for another year, Berliners have much to look forward to in winter. This season brings its own magic to the city, and there are a host of activities and attractions that brighten up its coldest days.

To shine a light on this wintery fun, we asked our colleagues to share some of their favorite things to do when winter arrives in Berlin.
#1 Christmas markets
There is no shortage of Christmas Markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) in Berlin during the winter season. Each is as unique and wonderful as the next. Dress warm and walk amongst the stalls selling trinkets and Christmas gifts, sip on some gluhwein, and enjoy a flammkuchen, bratwurst, or one of the many other popular winter dishes in the city.
Our graphic designer George recommends the Christmas market in Zitadelle Spandau, running from 24 November to 23 December.
“In Spandau Citadel there's a cool Christmas market which is spacious and offers a great view across the city when standing on the walls of the citadel.” — George
For the sweet tooths, our Performance Marketing Manager, Yuliia, shared her favorite way to enjoy the markets.
“I usually grab a good coffee or Glühwein and just walk. I also have a little tradition I like to maintain: buying chocolate-covered strawberries. No idea why it started, but I’ve kept it for years — I already did it this season.” — Yuliia

#2 Cozy cinemas
Berlin’s Yorck Kinogruppe has a great selection of cinemas across the city and a diverse catalogue of new and old films being shown. Most Yorck cinemas provide English subtitles and screen films in their original language, so be sure to check for OmU (Original language with German subtitles) and OmeU (Original language with English subtitles).
One Yorck cinema event worth a look this winter is the year-round Creepy Crypt at the Rollberg Kino in Neukölln. For the horror movie fans, Creepy Crypt is a weekly film series showing old classics of the genre and previewing unreleased horror movies with a Q&A afterwards. Get cozy with other cinemagoers and scream yourselves warm! #3 Crafting workshops

Winter is a wonderful time for hobbies and Berlin has no shortage of places to keep busy. Our Content Writer Julia tells us about the two things she relies on during the coldest months of the year.
“Crafting and community are the two must-haves that get me through the winter, and Berlin is rich in both! Rug Burn and the Orient Art Studio offer creative workshops that help you foster new skills, Yorck Kinogruppe hosts a community event every few weeks where strangers get together and craft while watching a movie, and Brewing Minds is a great way to meet like-minded people and enjoy various lectures while sipping Glühwein.” — Julia
#4 Indoor workouts
If you miss the opportunity to run, stretch, and exercise outside during the winter months then fear not, Berlin has no shortage of indoor activities available. One of the city’s most popular active past-times is indoor bouldering. Bouldering engages both your mind and your body, and it’s a great way to warm up during the winter.
Out in Pankow is Berta Block, a large hall that offers plenty of space for bouldering of all levels. Shoe and locker rental is only a few euros so put on your comfy clothes and break a sweat this winter!
#5 Sledging

Snow in Berlin is a cause for celebration. It brightens up the grey days, transforming city streets into a winter wonderland. In addition, it’s a great opportunity for a little outdoor fun.
George has another recommendation and it’s for anyone who loves to grab a snow sledge and hit the slopes.
“In Rehberge Park in Wedding, there is a gently sloping hill by the Rathenaubrunnen which is great for sledging when it snows. A very popular spot where even a big bag will suffice for getting down the hill.” — George
Don’t let the winter get you down. Take these recommendations and run with all that Berlin has to offer this winter!
